What Is SCM?

Software Configuration Management is the discipline of managing how software in modified and built through techniques including source code control, revision control, object build tracking, and release construction. SCM has traditionally dealt with only the source code; but in the last 15 years this has been extended to include all software components. SCM evolved from a developer support process into a production support process. Today, SCM is integral to problem determination and correction, and root cause analysis.
